Do I need to play previous Witchers before Witcher3

I'm thinking about buying The Witcher 3 and I know it's heavily based on a story/narrative. For the story/narrative to make sense, do I need to play the previous 2 Witcher games - or are the stories for each title independent of one another?

Why is the Team Fortress 2 install so huge?

I notice that Team Fortress 2 is almost 10 gigs when downloaded via Steam. Why is that? Since the game's graphics are very simplistic, and I assume there's not like an hour-long 1080p movie embedded somewhere, where is all those bits going towards?

What is a tick?

What is a tick? I have heard many instances of tick being used. For example, people will say that demos are recorded in 16 tick, that servers run in 64 tick, but really good servers will run in 128 ticks. I don't exactly understand what's a tick…
