So I own Shadowmere from the Dark Brotherhood.

However, I jumped on another horse for a few seconds, before fast travelling. I did a few quests, without even thinking about Shadowmere, and now when I need her, the horse that I rode for those few seconds appears.

Anyone have any idea where I can get Shadowmere back?

au revoir

Try going to the place where you bought, got or stolen your current horse. Shadowmere should be nearby. Try casting the Alteration spell, Detect Life, or use the Aura Whisper dragon shout (longer range than Detect Life) to try to find Shadowmere. Shadowmere should be within the range of Detect Life or Aura Whisper.

If not, Shadowmere might have gone back to the place where you first got him: the pool in front of the Dark Brotherhood sanctuary entrance, in Falkreath Hold (near Falkreath, the city).

If you still can't find Shadowmere, try teleporting him to your current location by using console commands (make sure you are outside [a location you can Fast Travel away from] and not in a walled city when doing this, as horses are not meant to go inside walled cities or other indoor locations, and may cause glitches).

Console commands to teleport Shadowmere to the player's current location:
prid 9CCD8
moveto player

'prid' targets an entity - Shadowmere in this case. '9CCD8' is Shadowmere's RefID. 'moveto player' moves that targetted entity near the vicinity of the player.

If Shadowmere is still not near your vicinity after doing this, he may be dead (that or his corpse was teleported near you). Try these commands to bring him back in the game and resurrect him:
enable
resurrect 1

  • @desaivv Have you used the player.placeatme console command? Because it will spawn a "new" copy of Shadowmere (with a different RefID). The original Shadowmere's RefID should be 0009CCD8 as as shown in this UESP article. Also, make sure you are selecting Shadowmere and not another object/creature/NPC. If Shadowmere was moved by prid 0009CCD8 and moveto player, that means you have moved the original Shadowmere. – galacticninja Dec 27 '11 at 00:08

Go to the pond were it first appers, and it should be there.

She probably died. Find her body, then wait for about a month. I waited 20 days and she was wandering around the spot she died.

There are many ways to get it back. Summoning another one. Hope he respawn at the lake. Whatever.

I think the most elegant one is to simply use the player.moveto 0009CCD8 console command to move YOU to the shadowmere. That way you also know where it is.

If you want this to be lore friendly, you save your game first. After you do that, you can reload and just walk or fast travel.

I had the same issue in my current playthrough - turns out I had fast-travelled from Skyrim to Solstheim from outside my house in Whiterun (Breezehome). I first checked the old and new Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary locations, then where I ended up having to steal Frost (the Black Briar Lodge outside of Riften) but figured I probably went to Solstheim from Whiterun -- sure enough Shadowmere was waiting for me at the Whiterun Stables. So it must be that if you fast-travel from Skyrim to Solstheim, Shadowmere should stay where you left him. I'm sure there are other causes, but this was was definitely what happened for me.

I should mention that I'm trying to get a 100% achievement playthrough, so wanted to avoid using console commands at all costs - and I knew (s)he didn't die.

I would imagine, if she's going to be anywhere, she'll be outside the Dark Brotherhood's entrance (where you originally obtained her). If not there, she may be where you last left her.

Otherwise, I'd imagine if she's not either of those places, you may have lost her for good.

Found out. Press the button to get the open up the coding bar, and then type in: "player.placeatme 0009CCD7" (Without the quotation marks) – pinksponge Dec 09 '11 at 18:56

@Pinksponge: if that solved it for you, please post that as an answer and accept it! – LessPop_MoreFizz Dec 09 '11 at 22:02

@pinksponge Just a heads-up: From UESP: "player.placeatme 000fea9b - Using this code will instantly summon an instance of an object or npc at your position. The example, in particular, summons a dragon. Not recommended for named NPCs. This code uses the Object (base) ID and not specific reference ID as it is creating a new instance of that object/actor in the world; using it with named NPCs can result in duplicates unless the original was somehow removed." Use 'prid' and 'moveto player' instead. More info here: http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Console – galacticninja Dec 10 '11 at 06:50
