San Francisco International Airport (IATA: SFO), located in san-francisco, california usa, is the busiest of three primary commercial airports serving the san-francisco-bay-area, and the main international gateway to the region. The airport is situated between U.S. Route 101 and San Francisco Bay, about 13 miles (21 km) south of downtown San Francisco and about 36 miles (58 km) north of downtown san-jose.
SFO has four main passenger terminals (1,2,3 and International) divided into six boarding areas (A,B,C,D,E,F, and G). Airside connections exist between areas C and D, E and F, and F and G. SFO is a major hub for united-airlines, which uses areas E and F for domestic flights and G for international flights, and virgin-america, which uses area D except for international arrivals, which use area A. All terminals, parking areas, the rental car center, and rail station are connected landside via the AirTrain people-mover.
The airport's BART rapid transit station is located outside area G and offers direct service to San Francisco on the Pittsburg/Bay Point–SFO/Millbrae line. A transfer to CalTrain for points south (including silicon-valley) is possible, but requires a transfer to a Millbrae-bound train at San Bruno. Connections to the other airports in the region, Oakland International (oak) and San Jose International (sjc) are not easy to make using public transportation, requiring multiple intermodal connections.
