Some places including Schengen, Turkey, and some countries hoping to join Schengen such as Bulgaria and Romania have a visa rule whereby you can only stay for ninety days out of every 180 days.

Schengen area

Article 20 of the Convention implementing the Schengen Agreement of 14 June 1985 included:

  1. Aliens not subject to a visa requirement may move freely within the territories of the Contracting Parties for a maximum period of three months during the six months following the date of first entry, provided that they fulfil the entry conditions referred to in Article 5(1)(a), (c), (d) and (e).

Since that time and partly in response to legal ruling, the regulations were changed including three months and six months to 90 days and 180 days. Accordingly notice may need to be taken of the time any advice was given, even if as recent as 2013, since the information may have been superseded. See for example How does the Schengen 90/180 rule work? for a before/after example.

There are various on-line calculators available to assist with determining whether one or more visits have breached or will breach regulations, latest departure date for compliance etc. The official one, if not the prettiest, is Short-stay Visa Calculator.
