I am running Windows 8. Suddenly one day I got an error that C:\ is low on disk space. After doing lot of analysis found that every minute 4-5 log files are being written into Temp folder. File name is like "MSI1d567.log". Googled but did not get any answers. How do I stop the errors. Here are the partial contents of the log file:

    The first line of the log indicates .NET Framework 4.0 is attempting to be installed which makes no sense since Windows 8.x has 4.5.x installed and an in-place upgrade to 4.0 – Ramhound Apr 01 '14 at 11:15

    From the logs, I was able to figure out the culprit. It was due to Visual Studio 2013. It was not installed correctly. I ran repair on the VS 2013 installer and I have not seen the logs for some time now - about 6 hours. Will keep it under observation for another 24 hours to confirm if the issue is really resolved. – Achinth Gurkhi Apr 01 '14 at 18:55
  • People, let's try to figure out some common patterns here. In my case, I had VS 2013 Web Edition and VS 2013 Desktop Edition and VS 2013 Win edition installed, and I believe this log cluttering started to occur only after I installed the VS 2013 Community Edition. I also have some editions of VS 2012 installed, and all the related software (IIS Expresses, SQL Expresses, ...). I also had Azure dev kits installed and a lot of other SDKs. – Csaba Toth Feb 11 '15 at 22:05
  • Additional info: I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials, and also EMET! Every minute (!) approximately 4 files are dumped, each log is about 3.2 MB. It's like a ticking time bomb filling the HDD. – Csaba Toth Feb 12 '15 at 04:02

From the logs I figured out that Visual Studio 2013 was not installed correctly. After running repair from the Visual Studio installer the problem got resolved.

This article describes the problem and gives the solution. It worked in my case:

If you have Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 Professional, Premium, or Ultimate editions installed and are finding many small MSI*.log files in your %TEMP% directory, you may find you are running low on disk space because of how many of these files are created. While they may only be about 3MB, what causes these files to be produced can do so often enough that it may not take long to fill up the drive where %TEMP% resides.

Workaround

We are consistently seeing this issue caused by a missing directory, C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\URTInstallPath_GAC (or %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\URTInstallPath_GAC).

To work around this issue,

  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. Type: mkdir %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\URTInstallPath_GAC

In PowerShell, use $env:SystemRoot instead of %SystemRoot%.
