MyFonts' "WhatTheFont" tool can match a font from an image. It suggests Erbar Medium Condensed. I would have thought it was a Futura, but the S and M look more like Erbar.

Wonderful! I've wondered this for years, but just thought to ask. And thanks for the link to the tool. – Organic Marble Feb 05 '20 at 18:41
  • after seeing this comment (which isn't the case) I don't want to give its author the satisfaction of seeing me accept my own answer. Is there any chance that your answer can be adjusted to satisfy the question in a general way, at least as a "proof of concept"? Your last comment leaves you in the air on a parabolic arc headed towards the gorge of eternal peril, never a good thing! – uhoh Feb 23 '20 at 06:11
