RAW refers to any of several native data formats that contain as close to the full amount of data captured by the sensor as the manufacturer allows you to reach. Typically these are proprietary formats based on TIFF, CIFF, or JPEG packing, and each company uses its own.

While RAW is not an acronym, it is usually written in all-caps in the manner of other image file formats, like TIFF, GIF, JPG/JPEG, and PNG. This helps distinguish the technical term from the English-language word.

There are many types of RAW formats, including, but not limited to

  • Canon
    • CR2 CRW
  • Nikon
    • NEF NRW
  • Panasonic
    • RAW RW2
  • Pentax
    • PTX PEF DNG*
  • Sony
    • ARW SRF SR2

DNG is an open standard for RAW created by Adobe. Read more at the tag wiki for [dng].

How can I edit this RAW image to get the much superior JPG image?

This is a small detail from picture that was taken by a cheap SX Canon in low light (ISO 100 0.8sec f/5). Maybe also the (auto) focus isn't good enough. The Jpeg (upper) is much more readable. How would you edit it (for example in UFRaw) to get at…

If I have two RAW files, how I can test whether they are indeed the same but with merely different tags? (By "the same" I mean "the same data from the sensor".) If it matters, the format I'm thinking about is ARW.
