Image stacking is often used in astrophotography. By combining multiple images and averaging the results, random noise will be reduced.

Short exposures of the stars taken by a fixed camera can be combined by stacking to produce star trails.

The technique can also be used in landscapes, where multiple images are taken with different apertures
