Is there a dynamic-range reduction device (preferably passive, optical)?

When processing sound, one can use a Compressor to reduce the dynamic (DR) range of the signal. In photography, we often run into the problem of scenes with DR larger than the sensor's capture ability. For example, shooting a person on a white snow…

I am trying to choose between buying a Canon 5D Mark III or a Nikon D600, In the advantages posted in Snapsort it appears that the Nikon wins over the Canon because of the dynamic range. Then follows two comparative values: 14.4 EV for Nikon and…

Where to get a dynamic-range test chart?

Where can I get a good chart to measure dynamic range? This would probably be a plastic or cardboard which would show stripes of different reflectance in small increments, preferably 1/4 EV or smaller. Something like a gradient but with a known…

What's the difference between dynamic range and normal pixel value?

This may sound like a very stupid question, but I can't seem to wrap my head around why a camera can only have around 10 stops of dynamic range when it can have 255 values for each pixel. Why doesn't it have 255 stops of dynamic range?

What is the minimum signal level for digital sensor?

Say there's a camera sensor, in a given time, a pixel sensor (abstract a group of subpixels from Bayer filter into one indivisible pixel) can only be activated when more than 10 photons hit it, after that, the pixel sensor is able to record photons…
