CDs (Compact Discs) are a tangible medium used for storing audio, video and data. It is considered a digital optical disc data storage format because the data is not stored in the way a physical hard drive would store it. The theory behind it is fairly complex and elaborate, please see the CD Wiki page if you would like the details.

CD technology existed in the 60's but was not made available until 1979 when Sony and Philips collaborated to produce a standard format, known as Red Book CD-DA. It's concept was piggy-backed off of Philips LaserDisc technology, which, in turn, led to DVD and Blu-Ray.

The first album to be released on CD was Billy Joel's 52nd Street, which reached the market alongside Sony's CDP-101 CD player on 1 October 1982 in Japan.
