GPS eXchange Format is an open non-propietary GPS file format free from license restrictions used to describe waypoints, tracks, and routes. Its tags store location, elevation, and time. Outside of Esri, it is the defacto standard for exchanging GPS data between applications.

GPX (the GPS Exchange Format) is a light-weight XML data format for the interchange of GPS data (waypoints, routes, and tracks) between applications and Web services on the Internet.

Current Status

The GPX 1.1 schema was released on August 9, 2004.
