The first main series games for the Gameboy Advance and the first Pokémon versions of the third generation.

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald take place in the Hoenn region of the franchise's fictional universe. This region is based on the real-world Japanese main island of Kyushu. The games introduce 135 new Pokemon and the Double battles, Pokémon Abilities & Natures mechanics.

The player chooses either a Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip as their starter Pokémon from Professor Birch.
