Half-Life: Alyx is a VR science fiction first person shooter, prequel to 2004's Half-Life 2, and developed and released in 2020 by Valve. It brings an end to the 13 year wait for another Half-Life game since Half-Life 2: Episode 2.
Half-Life: Alyx is a single-player First Person Shooter, the first Virtual Reality release by Valve, and the first VR game in the Half-Life universe. It reboots the Half-Life franchise after a waiting period of 13 years for the (still) expected Half-Life 3. It runs on Source 2, and is used as a flagship to promote VR gaming, as the first full-fledged Virtual Reality game.
Setting and Plot
In the game, the player takes control of Alyx Vance, the daughter of scientist Eli Vance, who was present during the catastrophic 'Resonance Cascade' at the Black Mesa Research Facility (Half-Life), that led to the multidimensional empire known as The Combine flooding the world and taking control.
Most players will know Alyx from the essential role she played in Half-Life 2 and its episodes, as Gordon's charming and indefatigable aide.
Taking place in the gap of almost two decades between the first and second Half-Life games, and set five years prior to Half-Life 2, Half-Life: Alyx shows a world trying to cope with a brutal extraterrestrial government.
After the Seven Hour War, in which The Combine overthrew the human governments of the world, City 17 has become the administrative center of the world. While the Combine work on constructing a massive fortress in the center of the city, known as the Citadel, Eli Vance and his daughter try to mount a resistance to thwart the occupying forces.
While doing so, they discover a
that changes the outcome of future events, and possibly the timeline of the entire franchise.
