I've looked at several videos of Portal 2 and am interested in buying it. The problem is that I've never played the original Portal, the first game of the series.

Should I play Portal before playing Portal 2?

  • Will I understand Portal 2's story more if I play the first game?
  • Are there concepts explained in the first game that aren't repeated in the second one, which would make me miss some little details?

    +It's only US$5 extra to buy a pack with Portal 1 & 2! – elwyn Apr 26 '11 at 09:42
  • Thanks to all. Currently downloading Portal through Steam and will most probably go for the PS3 version of Portal 2. – LudoMC Apr 26 '11 at 11:00

    @Justin: http://store.steampowered.com/app/620/?snr=1_4_4__100. Portal 2: $49.99 (USD). Portal Bundle: $54.98 (USD). Difference: $4.99 (USD). Pretty much $5.00 (USD) extra. ;) – Jeff Mercado Apr 26 '11 at 17:54

I should have ordered from Steam, but I ordered from GameStop. I was plying Portal 2 wishing I could relive Portal 1. – jumpcutking Apr 26 '11 at 17:57

I was quite happy to find it for free on Steam as I already had a Source game in my library. And as it also uses the Source Engine, it comes for free! :) – LudoMC Apr 26 '11 at 18:13
  • Just a quick comment I didn't think deserved to be an answer - Although Portal 2's single-player campaign is good for about 8 hours of playtime, Portal 1 can be finished on the first playthrough in about 45 minutes, as long as you don't get really really stuck on any of the puzzles. So if money isn't a problem, it won't take you long to play Portal before starting Portal 2. You can start Portal 2 on the same day! – Joshua Carmody May 05 '11 at 17:32
  • @JeffMercado More than one year after, I finally had time to finish first one and started the second one. Definitely worth starting with the Portal as single-player story mode is linked, and when starting Portal 2, you feel "at home". Hope there will be some cake left in this one :) – LudoMC Jun 02 '12 at 09:41
  • @JoshuaCarmody "as long as you don't get really really stuck on any of the puzzles"? Nope. As long as you keep solving the puzzles instead of mucking around having tons of fun without making any progress. ;) I think I spent an hour in the huge turret room long after finding a way to the exit. – SF. • I definitely recommend playing Portal 2 before playing Portal 3. – tnavidi Oct 30 '23 at 11:30

I think it's definitely worthwhile playing Portal first. I just started Portal 2 and would probably have been a bit lost without having played Portal first. There is almost no introduction to how the portal-gun and other stuff works in Portal 2 and there are a lot of references to the previous game.

It makes Portal 2 an even better game if you have played Portal.

+1 for the recommendation. You can't appreciate the pure hatred in the antagonist's remarks without playing the first. – Jeff Mercado Apr 26 '11 at 08:50

This is a good response, and should be the accepted answer. The enjoyment of Portal2 is significantly improved with a play through of Portal. – Neon1024 Apr 26 '11 at 09:56

Sorry, you're wrong. Portal 2 actually does a much better job of explaining the Portal Gun to new users than Portal 1 did. (I just re-played Portal 1 and after 2, and it's pretty poor in comparison. Plus you can hear Valve discuss how they improved the explanation in 2 in the developer's commentary.) – Django Reinhardt Apr 26 '11 at 12:03

@Django Reinhardt: If I remember correctly, GLaDOS explains stuff quite well in Portal (how the test chambers works, what to do etc.), whereas in Portal 2 she does almost no explaining.. but maybe I'll have to replay Portal as you did. – bummzack Apr 26 '11 at 12:23

No, GLaDOS doesn't explain anything! The game mechanics themselves are taught by the user experimenting (remember the room with the moving Portal Gun?). Portal 2 does a much better job of explaining the mechanics. – Django Reinhardt Apr 26 '11 at 12:28
  • Portal 2 doesn't explain the physics of portal flinging and stuff whatsoever. It's easier to "get it" since you're bouncing on aerial faith plates at the beginning of the game but Portal 1 actually EXPLAINS it. IMO this is the biggest leap and Portal 1 explained it way better. – Shinrai Apr 26 '11 at 14:55
  • ...also, this is the best answer. :) – Shinrai Apr 26 '11 at 14:55

I haven't played Portal 1 and had no trouble following the story line. It becomes quite clear what happened in the first part from what GLaDOS and Wheatley tell you. – magnattic Apr 26 '11 at 18:25

Now that I have Portal for free (best news of the day) I have no reason not trying the first one before starting Portal 2. I'll try to come back and tell you if the advice was good but seeing the upvotes, I have no doubt it is! – LudoMC Apr 26 '11 at 22:22
  • @LudoMC, good thing. Play it first, and enjoy it. It is a short game. – Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen Apr 27 '11 at 05:48
  • Yes, yes, yes. Play Portal 1 first! – Xonatron Feb 13 '12 at 18:41

So after having (finally) finished Portal and started Portal 2, it definitely makes sense to start with the first one. Great first opus and second one seems even better! – LudoMC Jun 02 '12 at 09:40
  • Not sure why no one has mentioned this, if you play Portal 2, you will want to play Portal 1 as well, and Portal 1s story will not be as enjoyable after playing Portal 2. Great games, both. – Millard Jun 16 '21 at 23:28
  • oh, someone did mention it, just in an answer. My bad. – Millard Jun 16 '21 at 23:28

Portal 2 starts out fairly simply. Thus, from a gameplay standpoint, you won't have a hard time figuring out the mechanics of the game.

However, Portal 2 continues the storyline from the first game. There are also many elements in the game that you wouldn't understand/enjoy/love not having played the first game.

Playing Portal 2 without playing Portal can be likened to hearing the punchline, but not the joke.

Furthermore, if you EVER wish to play the first one, it would be ruined by having played the second one first.

Certainly a lot of the story elements will make more sense if you have played the first game, however I don't think it's absolutely necessary.

As for gameplay instructions and explaining how things work, yeah, you'd be much better off playing the first one first. Portal 2 drops you much more suddenly into the thick of things than Portal 1 did.

Those reasons aside, you should get Portal 1 simply because it's a kickass game!

Gameplay: Portal 2 can stand on its own. The first levels of Portal are also in Portal 2, letting people in on the basics. The later levels explore techniques and mechanics that are not present in Portal 2. Thus, playing Portal and especially mods like Portal: Prelude can give you false expectations for Portal 2.

Plot: this is not really true. Wheatley vaguely hints about what happened in Portal, then GLaDOS "gives it away".

So yes, play Portal before Portal 2, if you can.

As already suggested and accepted play the original Portal before starting the sequel is preparatory to have even a greater experience with Portal 2.

But suppose that you are so excited because of all wonderful reviews and nice comments you read around, and you really want to start immediately Portal 2, while the game is installing you can spend 15 minutes doing the following things:

You should definitely play the first game.

Not only because it's important to understand the story, but also because its just as excellent a game as Portal 2 is.

You can play Portal 2 without having played Portal first as every game mechanic is presented in Portal 2. However, you'll spoil the story of the first one doing that as it is a direct sequel (and there are many references to the first one, in the story and in some puzzle).

I think it would be a good idea to play the first one, because once you have finished playing Portal 2, you'll want to play it.

Any other things you might think of.

There are other reasons for playing Portal 1 before 2 that are not really detailed in the other answers.

  1. Portal 1 is a very short game - short enough to even consider starting & finishing Portal 1 in the same day before making a start on Portal 2
  2. The majority of Portal 1 is arguably a tutorial (made of numerous test chambers) - learning the game mechanics through these levels will shorten the head scratching that may pop up in Portal 2
  3. Portal 1 was well received because it was something different - you will appreciate it more having not experienced Portal 2 beforehand

And as others have stated, Portal 2 is a sequel that follows on from events in Portal 1, but in a more story-driven manner. There is a sense that you are being thrown into the game ready to handle the faster pace of Portal 2 because you went through Portal 1.

I happened to play Portal 2 before I played Portal 1 (mostly because Steam had 2 on sale at the time).

While playing 2, I didn't really feel that lost. Most of the mechanics shared between the two games (portals, buttons, cubes, moving platforms, turrets) have similar “tutorial” levels. Story-wise, the two main robot characters in 2 will tell you how 1 ended. Which would be a disadvantage if you don't like spoilers.

There were a few references that didn't make sense until after I played 1. Most notably, the appearance of a particular prop in 2's final cutscene.

Having thoroughly enjoyed 2, I went on to play 1. But it was kind of a letdown, having only about a quarter of the play time, and missing the lovable characters of Wheatley and Cave Johnson. I probably would have appreciated 1 more if I hadn't played 2 beforehand.

If you want the full experience of portal 2, I recommend to play the Half-Life -series first and than the Portal-series. Because there are things in the story of Portal that refer to the story of Half-Life.
