One Night Ultimate Werewolf is based on the game Ultimate Werewolf (). The changes are designed to simplify and speed up the game. Where Ultimate Werewolf took place over several nights until game ending conditions were met, usually the werewolves remaining matching the number of villagers remaining or the last werewolf being lynched, One Night Ultimate Werewolf takes place in one single in game night.
