A highly strategic war-game which focuses on negotiations between players. Moves are not dice-based and the negotiation aspect provides many opportunities to form, manipulate, and break secret alliances.

The game starts in 1901 with 7 players who play as the 7 Great Powers of Europe: England, France, The German Empire (Referred to as Germany), Italy, The Austro-Hungarian Empire (Referred to as Austria), The Russian Empire (Referred to as Russia), and The Ottoman Empire (Referred to as Turkey). Each may negotiate with eachother and all unit commands are revealed by the players at the same time. Good Diplomatic skills are useful to prevail in this World War I themed game.

In Diplomacy, Should You Have Separate Country "Draws" For Players of Different Experience?

Once I was in Diplomacy game with two experienced players, one intermediate (me), and four people who had never played the game before. As it were, the two best players drew England and Turkey, and ran all over the board. Two of the new ones ended…

In Diplomacy, is it good strategy to have a primary alliance with a country on the opposite of the board?

The countries I'm thinking about are England and Turkey (northwest and southeast). This type of alliance seems unlikely to develop "naturally" in the real world, since they're nowhere near each other, but they have a common enemy, Russia. I have to…

Are "Diagonal" Attacks More Deadly in Diplomacy?

As France, for instance, it's fairly easy to defend against an extended "frontal" attack in the north by England and Germany, by covering the connected zones, Burgundy, Picardy, and Brest. Fortunately I've never had to do this, but it seems harder…

In Diplomacy, will I be "cornered" as Turkey if I don't use the "juggernaut" opening?

Turkey is fairly easy to play in an alliance with Russia (the "juggernaut"). The two of them partition the Balkans and Austria-Hungary, possibly with the help of Italy. Then they go their separate ways with Russia fighting Germany and/or England,…

England, being an island, has an enviable defensive position. This same fact makes it hard for it to get a foothold on the European Continent, where most of the remaining 31 supply centers lie. There are three countries that immediately block…

In Diplomacy, is it possible for an army to be convoyed by two countries if both write the appropriate orders?

There are numerous possibilities, but this one comes to mind. Italy and Austria are allies in a "Lepanto" opening (against Turkey). In the spring of 1901, Italy moves a fleet, Naples to the Ionian Sea, and Austria moves its fleet, Trieste to…
