Replace chain at 0.5% wear, or 0.75% wear?

Why do chain wear indicators have an indication for 0.5% wear and one for 0.75% wear? Are both measurements included because there is some personal preference from mechanic to mechanic, or rather are there separate uses for each? I find myself…

Restoring an old xUSSR bicycle for commuting... Feasible? Silly?

I've got a very old bicycle from the xUSSR days in my garage (outside UK atm). I'm not sure what year / model it is, to be honest... I've been commuting to work (8.5 miles each way) almost every day since last summer on a Pinnacle Stratus hybrid,…

This totally unrelated reply raised my question about traffic lights. I am starting to think that my chinese head lamp is a magical instrument, every time I go near traffic lights they turn green. It is hilarious to drive in heavy-traffic and just…

What is the purpose of this small block on a handlebar? This article on "bicycle archeology" (in Dutch) describes that they have almost completely disappeared, and are found only on very old bicycles. It does not really describe the purpose,…

How to maintain chains during touring?

I think requirements are reusable, simple, small-size and things-to-easily-to-carry. There are exotic answers with chain clearers and other things that do not qualify to me simple. Perhaps, the Sheldown-Brown's shake is closest, here, to clean…

How can I get started building a bicycle?

Now that I've been riding a while, I'm interested in building my own bike. In this case, it will be a bike for commuting and getting around town. It will probably be a flipflop fixie/single gear, but the kind of bike isn't important to this…

Is it possible to service Specialized Brain suspension systems at home?

I like to do all my own work on my bike, and with other forks and shocks I've had, I've been able to find the necessary service manuals and specialty tools to overhaul the systems myself at the end of the season. Now I have a Specialized Epic with…

Repairing Presta valves

This is the third time that I've had a leaking Presta valve on the tube. There must be a way of repairing the Presta valve rather than having to discard a good tube. Someone did it by applying glue, but I didn't watch closely enough to see where he…

Night Riding With Heavy Traffic

I live in a fairly urban setting and there are plenty of cars around when it gets past dark. The main point of having a bicycle light/backlight (I contend) is not for you to see, its for others to see you. Besides just using lights, there are plenty…

Hydraulic Disk brake piston not fully retracting

My front disk brake's piston doesn't fully retract. While I can ride the bike, the brake is slightly rubbing. (IE, if I just spin the wheel with my hand, it'll go around about one and a half times and then stop.) It's definitely slowing me down.…
