Questions tagged [sealant]

Questions relating to tube sealants, like the products named Slime or Stan's.

Sealants are liquid products added to a tube to prevent minor punctures from turning into full-blown flats. Some tubes come with sealant inside at purchase, and others are added afterwards by the user.

The sealant distributes itself around the inside of the tube because of the forces of riding. So when you get a puncture there's sealant ready to bubble out that spot and dry/set when it hits the lower atmospheric pressure. This retains most of the air in the tyre allowing you to keep riding without a tube swap.

Those who ride tubeless often have sealant inside the tyre instead of their tube.

What causes tire sealant to seal?

I've heard from others that air is what causes sealant to seal. People have said they've read that "somewhere" but I never seem to be able to find those articles. The reason I think air can't be the sole factor is that there is air inside the…

I had two new tires put on my bike and the LBS used Finish Line sealant. I have managed to puncture after 5 rides. The tire doesn’t lose much air, but air still bubbles out. My experience with Stans sealant on the previous tires is it did a good…

I'm going to do a tubeless setup soon for the first time. Yes, I'm very slow to adopt new technologies. :-) But, as I researched sealants, I had a crazy idea. This paragraph from bikeradar sparked it: Most sealants use the coagulating properties…
