A style of valve for tire inflation

Presta is a style of valve for tire inflation. Presta valves are thinner than Schrader valves and have a protruding release pin with a small stopper that twists down to prevent accidental pin depression.

Use a lock nut on a presta valve?

I've always used a lock nut with a presta valve, but I know others who don't use it and leave the valve stem to protrude through the rim hole without fastening. What, if any, are the advantages of not using a locking nut for a presta valve?
