The freewheel is a ratcheting mechanism, that coupled with a set of gears, is that threaded onto the rear hub of a bike. The freewheel allows the rear wheel to engage and move when the pedals are spun forward, but coast freely when the pedals are stationary or spun backwards.

The together with its associated is referred to as a . The serves the same purpose as a although they are mechanically different and cannot be readily interchanged.

A discussion of the difference between a and can be found on Sheldon Brown's website: Traditional Thread-on Freewheels

What is the difference between a freewheel and a hub?

I think these are both just types of cassettes, one all the rings come apart, and the other it's just one big piece all welded together. Can someone please tell me what the difference is?

How am I supposed to get into this screw-on singlespeed freewheel?

This is off a neighbour's kid's bike. The pawls weren't springing so I offered to take a look. I've had a couple of similar failures myself and thought I'd open it, clean it, and regrease it. Even with the chain on it felt/sounded dry, more so…

How does one remove a old French (Maillard) sprocket set from its freewheel?

I assume that the smallest sprocket functions as a lockring and has an outer thread that screws into a mating thread on the freewheel. (I also assume that the other sprockets have inner threads that screw around another (left-hand?) thread on the…

Getting the freewheel off the hub is no problem; what I want to do is to get the sprockets off the freewheel. I have tried tapping the lockring in an anti-clockwise direction with a steel punch, but it refuses to move. The markings on the smallest…

Freewheel not engaging when temperature below about -20c/-4f. What is freezing?

Is it moisture/slush in the freewheel that is not evaporating because I have to keep the bike outside all winter? Then it might freeze when the temperature goes low enough. How long would it take to evaporate if inside at room temperature?

Can anyone identify this freewheel type?

When googling the types it seemed to most closely match a Atom/Regina but it has 25 24 teeth and is about 3.5cm across. It's from a 1980s Raleigh road bike. But the bike has had a lot of work done to it so this part might not be original. Thanks…
