Questions tagged [clothes]

The clothes you wear when riding, whether they're bike-specific or everyday.

There are lots of kinds of cycling-specific clothes:

  • Shorts can be baggy (popular with MTBers) or tight spandex (popular with road cyclists and tourers)
  • Tights and leggings cover the whole leg for harsher weather
  • Jerseys cover the torso. They can be short- or long-sleeved, tight or baggy. Thin, breathable material is common, but there are thicker, warmer ones for hot weather. They often have pockets at the back for access while riding.
  • Arm or leg warmers are worn with shorts and short-sleeved jerseys in colder weather.
  • Waterproof jackets, trousers, and overshoes keep other clothes dry in wet weather.
  • Special-purpose shoes might include cleats for "clipless" pedals, and often have stiffer soles for better power transfer.
  • Hats and other headgear protect the head from hot or cold weather, or rain. have their own tag.

Utility and urban cyclists tend to just wear everyday clothes, and questions about these are appropriate for this tag too.

Can frequent light bicycle commuting severely damage pants?

I bought a nice pair of pants to wear to work, and I am reasonably certain they were of good quality (although maybe I was mistaken) and I found that the seat of the pants was worn down to holes in less than a year of near-daily commuting. I commute…

I went to get my first road jersey today. I found one I liked and the overall fit and feel seemed right, but I was surprised at how short the front is. I am aware that it is designed for being used while riding where this makes sense, however I…

Why is there a stitched hole in the back pocket of my new jersey?

I just finished a charity ride and found that the brand new jersey bought for it has a hole in the back center pocket. It is neatly cut, with stitching around it to prevent fraying, so I'm sure it is a feature rather than a defect. What is the…

What did people ride for cold weather cycling "back in the day?" (Is it cheap?)

Everyone who has ridden a bike any real distance in the cold has likely noticed a few things. Due to the speed to effort ratio of the bicycle, certain thermal realities have different relationships than they do on foot. For example; a cyclist who…
