Many countries apply different forms of nighttime restrictions during pandemic: curfews, early restaurant closings. What is the reasoning behind that? Intuitively it seems to me that people are less likely to crowd up during nighttime.

Why do politicians create more advertising badmouthing their opponents, rather than promoting themselves?
I live in Iowa and have been inundated with a lot of political advertising everywhere (TV, mail, internet) as the 2020 US election approaches. It seems to me that most of the political advertising from all side mostly focus on characterizing…

Why do primaries contestants (usually) announce that they are "suspending" their campaign when they exit it?
It seems to be just another political euphemism, in line with politicians not being terribly willing to admit when they are wrong, but is there anything more than that to their use of "suspend" when they exit a primary race? Has there been any…

What threat, if any, does Iran really pose to the US?
The US army absolutely dwarfs the Iranian army in terms of military might.
Realistically, Iran cannot attack mainland US, whereas the US could nuke Iran into oblivion at a moment's notice. They seem to be David and Goliath except Goliath has the…

Can only rich people become president of the US?
It seems that, in practice, the US Presidency is limited to rich people. For example, elections are extremely expensive when you are trying to win and getting attention during the primaries and general election seems to require lots of money.

What is the fundamental difference between whaling and hunting other animals?
I read this article and it seems like activists from cultures without a long history of whaling are inconsistent in their criticism of Japan for its whaling.

Why do Republicans and others accept the propagandaic use of the term "Progressives"?
The word "progressives" has always confused me. It's sort of like an antonym to "conservatives", but the difference is that "conservative" is a neutral word. It tells us that you want to "conserve" something, but that something may be both good or…

What is the proper (non-"Gerrymandering") purpose of political districting?
I read some other posts here that discuss gerrymandering.
It seems to me that I still have a question that these posts don’t answer, but I’m not at all sure that I can make it clear.
But here we go.
There’s some analogy between political districts…

Why does the US require non-resident citizens to file taxes even for non-US income?

Thus, a US…
