The following variants have been built:

- MD-82: a variant with more powerful engines offering a higher maximum payload.
- MD-83: a variant with increased fuel capacity offering a higher maximum range.

A total of 1191 aircraft have been delivered with 298 still in service as of July 2018.
McDonnell Douglas also offered a further stretched variant called MD-90 since 1995. A shorter variant was developed under the name MD-95 and then later sold as Boeing 717 after boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas in 1997.
